Difference between Acronym and Abbreviation

Abbreviation is a short form of a group of words that are long and commonly used. The letters in the abbreviation are the first letters of the group of words.

e.g, CBI for Central Bureau of Investigation, GOI for Government of India.

In case of Latin phrases or terms, the shortened forms are different from that of the original phrase or term.

e.g, i.e (that is), ‘coz (because), e.g (exempli gratia).

Acronym is also short form for a very long word. The first alphabet of each word is taken and combined to form a new word. This new word is pronounced altogether in a different way which will be absolutely different from the original word itself.

e.g, RADAR is acronym for Radio Detecting and Ranging * NASA is acronym for National Aeronautic and Space Administration,

All acronyms are abbreviations, but all abbreviations are not acronyms.
