Difference between Idiom and Phrase
Phrase is a group of
words that are used together in a fixed expression. Phrasal verb is a
combination of words that is used like a verb and consist of an adverb and
adverb or preposition.
Examples: 'Take
off', 'do away with'
Idiom is an
expression whose meaning is different from the meaning of individual words. It
can either be one word or a group of words which when used together have a
different meaning from the literal meaning of its component words.
Examples: 'catch
one's eye', 'keep one's fingers crossed', 'state of the art'
Usually idioms are
special to one language and cannot be translated word for word.
