Difference between Idiom and Phrase

Phrase is a group of words that are used together in a fixed expression. Phrasal verb is a combination of words that is used like a verb and consist of an adverb and adverb or preposition.

Examples: 'Take off', 'do away with'

Idiom is an expression whose meaning is different from the meaning of individual words. It can either be one word or a group of words which when used together have a different meaning from the literal meaning of its component words.

Examples: 'catch one's eye', 'keep one's fingers crossed', 'state of the art'

Usually idioms are special to one language and cannot be translated word for word.
