Difference between ‘stationary’ and ‘stationery’


‘Stationary’ and ‘stationery’ are simple words even known to school kids. However, many of us usually get confused with these two words.In fact the meanings of both are entirely different.

‘Stationary’ means something that is still or not moving or not intended to be moved. It is used as an adjective and rarely as an adverb.

Example: “In the geography class the children sat stationary as the teacher was very strict”.  In this sentence the word it is used as an adverb.

Example 2: “We had to wait in a stationary position till the programmes began”. In this sentence the word is used as an adjective.

On the other hand, ‘stationery’ means any writing materials, books, papers, pencils, envelopes, pens, ink, rulers, etc.

Example: “We have to buy our stationeries as the school will reopen soon”.
