Origin and meaning of ‘cc’ and ‘bcc’ ?

The terms ‘cc’ and ‘bcc’ are quite known to email users.  These fields are used when you want to send an email message to one or more persons (direct recipients) and keep others informed about the message.

‘bcc’ is the abbreviation of ‘Blind Carbon Copy’ and ‘cc’ is the abbreviated form of ‘Carbon Copy’. While cc recipients can see each other’s email id, bcc recipients cannot see the email ids of other persons who are copied. A bcc recipient can only see the email ids in the ‘to: field’.

The term ‘cc’ has its origin from letter writing or typewriting where there was the practice of using carbon copy paper to send the same letter or message to many people. By this we could avoid rewriting the letter again and again. The term ‘cc ‘ which was originally evolved from physical world was later adopted to refer to the same concept in digital world.
