How to pronounce ‘Lingerie’ ?
‘Lingerie’ is one of the most commonly mispronounced word. Many people pronounce it as ‘ling-er-rie’. The correct pronunciation is ‘lahn-zhuh-rey’ ( US) or ‘lahn-zhuh-ree’ ( UK).
The word ‘Lingerie’ refers to women’s undergarments and nightclothes. It was derived from the French word ‘linge’ which means linen. The plural form is lingeries.
The word is gender specific in English language since it refers only to undergarments of women. In French language the word is defined as men’s as well as women’s undergarments. The word is increasingly used to refer to visually appealing undergarments of women.

ReplyDeleteSorry but I do not agree with these pronunciations and neither do the Oxford and MacMillan dictionaries. In the UK, the word should be pronounced to resemble the French pronunciation of this word i.e. lan--zhuh-ree (short 'a') and not lahn-zhuh-ree (long 'a'). The Web seems to indicate that the US pronunciation also has this short 'a' but with 'ey' instead of 'ee'.

Obviously, since it's spelt with an I, tje first syllable of lingerie should rhyme with cinq and not with cent. To pronounce the last syllable as 'ray' as so many Americans do, is simply excruciating.
