A conjunction is a word used to join words or group of words or sentences.
Example 1: The boys went out and girls started dancing.
In the above sentence, the conjunction ‘and’ is used to connect two sentences: The boys went out. Girls started dancing.
There are mainly two types of conjunctions
A. Co-ordinating conjunction. A conjunction which is used to join two independent statements or two statements of equal importance is called a co-ordinating conjunction. The following are examples of co-ordinating conjunction. and, both...and, as well as, no less than, not only...but also, but, still, yet, nevertheless, whereas, while, only, or, either...or, neither...nor, otherwise, else, for, so, therefore. Example 1: Mina is both beautiful and intelligent.
Example 2: The time was over, nevertheless we continued the project.
B. Subordinating conjunction. A conjunction which is used to join statements, one of which is dependent on the other is called a subordinating conjunction. The following are examples of subordinating conjunction. that, whether, when, whenever, before, after, till, since, as soon as, while, as, where, wherever, because, since, so...that, such...that, that, lest, if, unless, though, although, even if, as...as, than, as if. Example 1: As soon as I got the appointment letter, I left for Bangalore. Example 2: He reacted as if he were the boss.
Now select the correct conjunction:
2.........you sow, ..... shall you reap
3..........had I left for jogging.....the paper boy came home.
4. He behaved ...........he were rich.
5. I would have accepted the money......they had offered it to me
6. Work hard........you reach the goal.
7.The rain started ............. we reached home.
8.They ........... pay the rent ........... vacate the flat
9.___________ Rajan was very cunning, the Minister trust him.
10.Mr. Mohan spoke loudly, ________ students did not hear.
