]]>Good Morning to you all
Today, I would like to talk about my favorite festival, Onam.Onam is a harvest festival, celebrated especially in Kerala during the month of August or September. The celebrations last for 10 days. The legend says that Mahabali, the great king who once ruled world visits his people during these days every year to take a stock about his kingdom. This boon was given to him by Vamana who sent him to Patala due to the influence of Devas. The first day of Onam is called Atham.During these days, we decorate our home with flowers arranged in circular shape called pookalam.Children wake up early and pluck flowers from adjacent places to make pookalam.During the next nine days pookalam made in variety shapes and sizes are arranged in home courtyard. The final day of Onam is called Thiruvonam. The day marks family get togethers, gifts exchanges and traditional feasts.
This year I was fortunate to celebrate Onam with my grandparents and relatives. We woke up early and decorated our home courtyard. Myself and My brother got new dress from my grandparents and aunts. My mother and grandmother prepared a traditional Onasadya. My most favorite dish in Onasadya was my mom’s Palada dessert.Late in the evening we went out for an outing in the park. I missed my father who couldn’t join with us because he was in Kuwait.Onam remains as one of my favorite festival.
Thank You.

]]>Today I am going to talk about Easter.
Easter is a Christian festival that celebrates the rebirth of Jesus Christ. Some people think that the term, “Easter”, originates from a Pagan goddess named Eostre. Records show that this festival was celebrated since the 2nd century. The season of Easter lasts for six weeks and begins sometime in March or April. Though the date of Easter is not fixed every year, it occurs on a Sunday. Sunday is symbolic, because it was the day that Jesus rose from the dead. Today, the meaning of Easter, for millions of Christians, is that of honouring and recognizing Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead Christians around the globe hold this festival in high regard.
People fast during this time and incorporate more spiritual habits into their daily routine. Many of the customary practices of Easter don’t, actually, have anything to do with the occasion itself. However, children participate in Easter egg hunts and are given tons of candy. Eggs are decorated using paint, pens and other adornments. Earlier, chicken eggs were dyed, for this festival. But modern traditions include eggs that are made of chocolate or plastic, which are filled with candies. The Easter bunny is a figure from folklore, which carries a basket of coloured eggs. On the night before Easter, the bunny is said to hide the basket in the homes of children, so that they may find it on the day of Easter. Ideally, the Easter bunny is a judge of character, as only those children, who have been nice, receive gifts on Easter. The celebration of Easter is different in all cultures. Some communities have elaborated celebrations such as processions, whereas others involve attending mass and singing songs. The day will also witness lavish feasts and a variety of tradition dishes being cooked and served.
Easter truly encapsulates and celebrates the most important part of Jesus Christ Life. It’s a reminder about the sufferings he underwent for the humanity, the prize he paid for it and his resurrection.
Thank you.

]]>The til brimming with fragrant and delicious oil, stands for friendship and jaggery for the sweetness of speech and behavior. The distribution of til-gul (sesame sweet),therefore, forms a touching aspects of the Makara Sankramana celebration. In Tamilnadu Makar sankranti is celebrated as Pongal.
On the social plane, the Sankraanti carries a vital significance for social and national welfare. It is the warmth of love and fellow-feeling among the people of a society or country that ultimately makes them stand up in unison in adversity or in prosperity. It is the necessary lubricant to make the social machine work smoothly without friction.
Sankraanti, signifying light, also gives the message of intellectual illumination. It is the capacity to discriminate between the right and the wrong, the just and the unjust, truth and falsehood,. It is this discriminative wisdom – Viveka – which leads the individual on the path of enlightenment and human happiness. The present era of science and technology is indeed driving the modern civilization into over exploitation of natural resources and utter ignorance of mother nature. The growing catastrophic consequences of air, water and soil pollution are a few instances of how far our modern intellect has strayed away from the true path of intellectual wisdom. There for, Makar Sankrati as a way of respecting and celebrating Mother Nature holds tremendous significance.
The birth of Swami Vivekananda on the Sankramana day is an inspiring indication of the significance of makar Sankrati. In short, Makara Sankramana embodies the ardent prayer of Asato maa sadgamaya,Tamaso maa jyotirgamaya,Mrityoormaa amritam gamaya,Lead me, O Lord, from untruth to Truth from darkness to Light and from death to Immortality.

]]>The full moon day of the month Ashada Masa ,June -July is celebrated as Gurpoornima. In Sanskrit, ‘Gu’ means Darkness and ‘Ru’ Means one who removes. Hence Guru is considered as one who sheds the light of knowledge and remove the darkness of ignorance. The significance of Guru Purnima can be understood from the fact that the term ‘Guru’ is used with much reverence and devotion and is a person who is considered as your friend, philosopher,Guide and life long companion and is different from the concept of the term teachers. The following Slokas from India’s ancient texts summarizes the importance given to a Guru. Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnuhu, Guru Devo Maheswaraha,Guru Saakshaat Parabhrahma, Tasmai Sri Gurve Nam. The festival is deeply routed in the ancient education system of Guru Shisya tradition which is considered as sacred. In this modern era where values are diminishing and society tends to be divisive, selfish with lack of mutual respect, it’s very important that we understands the significance of such festivals . Let’s celebrate Guru Poornima with deep devotion and pay tribute to all our teachers for their roles in guiding us.
