A very good morning and a very happy independence day to all beautiful people out there reading me!

The phrase ‘Unity in Diversity’ emphasizes on the existence of harmony, holding a lot of differences in chorus, and India is one country that stands for this, undoubtedly. We have different ideologies and beliefs, yet we stand together by respecting each other’s feelings and at the same time enjoying ours, freely, at the same time.

India is diverse in all ways a man can think of. From the freezing Himalayas to the sun embraced coastal regions; from the rain-fed and forested Assam to the parched soils of Rajasthan; the mineral rich deccan plateau; the islands and the fertile northern plains. India is so diverse geographically that it is the only country to have all major geographic formations. But, the diversity doesn’t end here. There exist differences in language and dialects, religion and castes, culture and traditions, various cuisines and attires, living style and what not.

Our country is a traveller’s paradise. Every state they go, every district they reside, they will gain a new experience. It is this richness of variance that a traveller in them, crave for. Indian world famous and colourful touristic spots are parts of our historic and religious past. The mountain ranges, innumerable rivers and lakes, the scenic beauty, dark forests and the rich wildlife along with people of diverse cultures, food styles, clothing, traditions, etc are a feast for the eyes and fascinates more visitors from around the globe, giving us the title-Incredible India. It is these differences that make India what it is today. It is the beauty of this difference that attracts the whole world towards us.

But in the last few years, there are incidents that make us question the relevance of this feeling of unity…

It is said that a greater number of diversities increase the complexity of unity. This might be true up to some extent because, recently we hear a lot of unrest taking place all over the country and the themes of these developments are either religion or politics. It is true that such happenings are not something new and the magnification such a feeling among some, was the main reason for a split, back in the 1947. But the significance of these unrests in the present scenario comes when we think about the time that has elapsed after India became independent.

Have we not changed even after 70 years?

The fact that communal violence is prevailing even in this smart and practical age is shocking and unbelievable taking up the lives of innocents. Freedom of expression is often misused and misinterpreted touching the sentiments of many. Social media which had the power to bring whole world together for mutual support, which in turn would help in a virtual realization of our manthra ‘vasudhaiva kudumbakam”, is being misused terribly for complete disaster. This is not a good sign for our country which is on a fast mode of development. The whole world is watching us.

I still remember how my mom used to tell me the stories of celebrating Diwali, Onam, Christmas and Eid together with all her friends and their family. They did not bother as to which festival it was, for them it was just a reason to celebrate. So, as a young but a proud citizen of India, what I would like to say is that we have to live harmoniously with everyone, not hurting their feelings or emotions, but at the same time not fearing to express our own ideologies.

It is this diversity that makes our country. It is that sense of oneness among this diversities which made us stand as Indian before the world. If we were not this diverse in all aspects, we would not have reached where we are today. ‘United we stand, divided we fall.’

As rightly said by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi- Unity in diversity is India’s strength. There is simplicity in every Indian. There is unity in every corner of India. This is our strength.’

Once again Happy Independence Day to all citizens of our mighty nation.

Jai Hind!!

“At the stroke of midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.”Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had read these lines from his speech “Tryst with destiny” when India was getting freedom on August 15th 1947.

India was a slave in its homeland for more than 200 years. All our rights and freedom were snatched by the Britishers. We were deprived of our basic needs like education, food, shelter etc.  But patriots like Subash Chandra Bose , Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru , Bal Gangadhar Tilak fought dauntlessly for our country. They gave their lives on the altar of our country. Many of our brothers & sisters were tortured and died while fighting for freedom. Yet the fire was already lit in the minds. They didn’t stop. They fought until we got our Independence on 15th August, 1947.

We celebrate Independence Day every year on 15th August to pay homage to our martyrs who fought to free our country from the shackle of British Rule. We hoist our flag proudly and sing National Anthem. On this day we remember the sacrifices our freedom fighters had made to make our country free. We take a pledge on this day to be a true citizen to our country and fight back if we face any hurdle. Today, we bask in the sun of freedom and glory. This could be only possible because of our freedom fighters and our forefathers who struggled hard to cultivate a better future for us. Imagine how our country would be today, if we hadn’t got independence. The thought of it is dreading and mind shaking. So what does Independence actually mean?

Independence does not just mean being free but it also means to be strong, leading and self-sufficient. Today, India is a developing nation. It has left no stone unturned in any field, be it science, technology, agriculture, arts etc. We are enjoying the advantage of equal rights, harmony and peace. Yet, our country still needs us. Even today, we face troubles and our army men are fighting back the enemies bravely. It is our duty also to play a key role to keep our country safe. To be a dutiful citizen to our country and contribute towards its development and progress. To remove the differences we have amongst us and stand united and strong. Hence, each one of us is a child to our Mother India. Let us protect the golden bird.

In the 89 years of British rule in India, Britain’s only commitment was to loot India and suppress Indians using brutal power. All through the history, the nationalists protested against the invasion of their mother land and demanded freedom. Britain adopted strategies at all level to counter and crush such movements. In 1919, the British government passed the Rowlatt Act, a law which gave unlimited powers  to the government such as political cases can be tried without juries and permitted keeping  of suspects without trial. This was implemented based on the recommendations of Rowlett’s committee in1918.

There was a sudden uproar across India against this act.  Mahatma Gandhi appealed to the people for peaceful protests across the Nation. On April 13, 1919 a protest meeting was planned by the local people at Amritsar’s Jalian Wala Bagh. The day was remarkable as it was Baisakhi, one of Punjab’s biggest festival. Anticipating protests, General Dyer, the acting Commander of Amritsar banned all public gatherings. People ignored general Dyers order and thousands gathered.  General Dyer along with a battalion of fully armed soldiers marched toward the venue and blocked all exits. At 5.30 PM General Dyer, without any warning ordered his soldiers to fire at the unarmed crowd. The brutal nature of General Dyre was evident that he ordered his soldiers to focus the fire power to where it was more crowded. It was estimated that around thousand men, women and children was killed in that action. Many were killed in the stampede which followed. This cold blooded massacre by the British boosted the nationalistic spirit among Indians and more massive protests were followed. India ultimately won freedom in 1947. Twenty years after this incident, Udham Singh,  who managed to escape from the Jalian Walah bagh  as a young boy , later turned as a revolutionary  and  killed  Michael O’Dwyer. Michael O’Dwayer was the Governor of Punjab in 1919  who had supported General Dyer’s massacre plan.

The ultimate sacrifice of hundreds of nationalist Indians at Jalin Walah Bagh should always be remembered . It is a gentle reminder to all Indians about the cost at which the freedom is enjoyed today.

Respected dignitaries on dais, other distinguished members off stage , teachers and my dear friends

Today  I am going to talk about a legend who is regarded as one of the architects of modern Indian science , Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose.

Jagadish Chandra Bose was born on November 30, 1858 in Mymensingh which is now part of Bangladesh. His father Bhagabanchandra Bose was a Deputy Magistrate. Bose received early education in a village vernacular school. He was sent to Kolkata at the age of 11 to learn English and was educated at St Xavier’s School and College.  He was a brilliant student. He passed BA in Physical Sciences in 1879.In 1880, Bose went to England. He studied medicine at London University for a year but gave it up because of his own ill health. Within a year, he moved to Cambridge to take up a scholarship to study Natural Science at Christ’s College, Cambridge. In 1885, he returned from abroad with a BSc degree and Natural Science Tripos .

After his return, he got a lecturer’s job at Presidency College, Kolkata with a salary half that of his English colleagues. He accepted the job but refused to draw his salary in protest. After three years the college ultimately conceded his demand and Jagadish Chandra Bose was paid full salary from the date he joined the college. As a teacher, Jagadish Chandra Bose was very popular and engaged the interest of his students by making extensive use of scientific demonstrations. Many of his students at the Presidency College later became famous in their own right and these included Satyendra Nath Bose and Meghnad Saha.In 1894, Jagadish Chandra Bose decided to devote himself to pure research. He converted a small enclosure adjoining a bathroom in the Presidency College into a laboratory. He carried out experiments involving refraction, diffraction and polarization. It would not be wrong to call him as the inventor of wireless telegraphy. In 1895, a year before Guglielmo Marconi patented this invention; he had demonstrated its functioning in public.Jagadish Chandra Bose later switched from physics to the study of metals and then plants. He was the first to prove that plants too have feelings. He invented an instrument to record the pulse of plants.

Although Jagadish Chandra Bose did invaluable work in Science, his work was recognized in the country only when the Western world recognized its importance. He founded the Bose Institute at Calcutta, devoted mainly to the study of plants. Today, the Institute carries research on other fields too.Jagadish Chandra Bose died on November

Let me conclude my speech by paying tribute to this true legend who believed that the inventions are discoveries are not to be used for wealth creation but should be for the benefit of people

Thank you

A National Flag is not just a piece of cloth, but it symbolizes the most sacred values a country stands for. In short it represents the country itself. This is the reason why we salutes or stand up when seeing a national Flag. Arthur Marcy once said “Cheers for the sailors that fought on the wave for it, Cheers for the soldiers that always were brave for it, Tears for the men that went down to the grave for it, Here comes the flag!”

Indian national flag is horizontal, rectangular in shape with tri color, saffron,  white and green. The center of the flag is a blue wheel or chakra with 24 spokes. The flag represents the hopes and aspirations of the people of India and is a symbol of national pride. The significance of the colours and the chakra in the National Flag was amply described by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the first president of India. Bhagwa or the saffron colour denotes renunciation of disinterestedness. It mean that the  leaders of this country must be indifferent to material gains and dedicate themselves to their work. The white in the centre means light, the path of truth to guide our conduct. The green symbolises our relation to soil, our relation to the plant life here on which all other life depends. The Ashoka Wheel in the centre of the white is the wheel of the law of dharma. Truth or satya, dharma or virtue ought to be the controlling principles of those who work under this flag. Again, the wheel denotes motion. There is death in stagnation. There is life in movement. India should no more resist change, it must move and go forward. The wheel represents the dynamism of a peaceful change. This Dharma Chakra depicted the “wheel of the law” in the Sarnath ,the Lion Capital made by the 3rd-century BC Mauryan Emperor Ashoka

The flag was originally designed by Sri. Pingali Venkaya in 1921 with a traditional spinning wheel in the middle. Later, Tradition spinning wheel was replaced by Ashoka Chakra. Later, the National Flag of India was adopted in its present form during the meeting of Constituent Assembly held on the 22 July 1947. The flag is respectfully hosted on national festivals like independence day and republic day.

Respected Teachers and my dear friends,

Today I am going to talk about one person, who lived for just 24 years, but kept on inspiring millions of Indians, even  86 years after his death. Yes he is none other than Bhagat Singh.

Bhagat Singh was an iconic Indian revolutionary who is considered as one of the most influential figures during the Indian Freedom Movement. He was born in 1907 to Kishan Singh and Vidyavati in the Punjab Province. At the age of 12, young Bhagat visited the Jalian Wallah bagh massacre site, where hundreds of unarmed Indians  participated in a peaceful protest were mercilessly butchered by General Diar. He was deeply perplexed with the traditional nonviolence struggle and was deeply attracted to the revolutionary ideas of fighting against the mighty British. In 1922, he joined the Young Revolutionary Movement and began to advocate in favor of the violent overthrow of the British Government in India. In March 1925,the Naujawan Bharat Sabha was formed with Bhagat Singh, as its secretary. Bhagat singh also joined the Hindustan Republican Association, a radical group along with fellow revolutionaries Chandrashekhar Azad and Sukhdev. Initially, Bhagat Singh’s activities were limited to writing aggressive articles against the British Government, printing and distributing pamphlets outlining principles of a violent uprising, aimed at overthrowing the Government. Young, aggressive and influential among youth, Bhagat singh soon became a focal point for the government and police and was arrested in a bombing case. He was later released after five months. On 30 October 1928, Lala Lajpat Rai led a massive protest and marched towards the Lahore railway station to protest against the arrival of the Simon Commission. The march was brutally trashed down by the government sevearly injuring lala lajpat Rai  who later died . As a revenge for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh and his associates plotted the assassination of James A. Scott, the Superintendent of Police, believed to have ordered the lathi charge but mistakenly killed JP Saunders. In response to the formulation of Defence of India Act, the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association planned to explode a bomb inside the assembly premises, where the ordinance was going to be passed. On April 8 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw a bomb onto the corridors of the assembly, shouted ‘Inquilab Zindabad!’ and threw pamphlet  into the air. The bomb was not meant to kill or injure anyone and therefore it was thrown away from the crowded place, but still several council members were injured in the commotion. Following the blasts Bhagat Singh and his associated were arrested and put on trial and was later sentenced to death. On March 23, 1931, 7:30 am, Bhagat Singh was hanged in Lahore Jail with his comrades Rajguru and Sukhdev. His sacrifice fueled Indian freedom movement which ultimately met success in 1947.

The life of Bhagat Singh remains as one of shining examples of patriotism, commitment and sacrifice.

Vande Matharam

Thank you.
