Respected dignitaries on stage, off the stage, teachers and my dear friends,

Our environment is one of the most important factors which help us survive on this planet. Every thing which surrounds us- the air ,water and the land in which  people, plants, trees , animals live is defined as our environment.  It helps us in various ways. The air we breathe , the clothes we wear , the wood we use, medicines we take and many more are all from our environment. It also plays a very important role in bringing  the much required resource for us- Water.  So, it is absolutely important for us to protect our environment.

Our environment provides us with a lot of things, but what do we give in return? Nothing, but disturbances. We disturb the whole Mother Nature. Our disturbances not only affect the life of trees and other resources but  also affects our life. Have you ever thought what are we doing?? After eating chips and chocolates, we throw the wrappers to the road. After drinking juice we throw the cans to the road.

All the wastes we throw to the road and make them look so dirty. When heaps of wastes piled together helps  mosquitoes and other insects to grow. These insects spread various diseases. Plastics take at least 450 years to decompose with the soil. Even after decomposing, the soil won’t be suitable for growing crops in the future. We all know that Global Warming , which is one of the root causes which ruins the environment is because of us. Therefore, we have to unite together to take some steps to reduce global warming, pollution and all the other stuffs which ruins our environment.

‘‘WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY’’ is celebrated on 5th June every year. It is celebrated to spread the awareness of planting trees as well as conserving our environment and our natural resources. The theme of world environment day 2020 is to focus on Biodiversity. It will be hosted in Colombia in partnership with Germany. Why are we caring about diversity? All the organisms are interrelated with each other. and so preservation of food chain is very important. Each and every thing in our environment, irrespective of their sizes is vital in this chain and  play a role in maintaining the balance.

Other than, Global warming, there are also some other factors that affects our environment.
1. Air Pollution
2. Deforestation
3. Overpopulation
4. Climatic changes

Let us now think about what we can proactively do to to reduce these disturbances.

1. Plant more and more trees.
2. Save water: You can do this at your home itself by turning off the taps when you are brushing or using a mug than taking a shower.
3. Close your curtains on hot days, to keep the house cool and try to reduce the use of fans or air-conditioners.
4. Let the clothes dry with the heat of the sun.
5. Try to reduce plastic. Use cloth bags for shopping.
6. Stop using fossil fuels. Instead, use clean energy.
7. Practice the environmental cube, R3: Always REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE

We all are a part of the nature and we are very much dependent on her. So, let us plant  more trees and save our mother nature. Let us bring awareness about the use of plastic . So today, on world environment day ,let us all take an oath that we will be united in our fight to protect our mother  nature . Let us hope that  our world will be a better place so that our next generation can live a healthy life.

Thank you

Respected Dignitaries on stage, off the stage , teachers and my dear friends,

A few months back, it was the peak of the board season. Meaning, board exams were around the corner, pre-boards were over and it was the last week of school classes. One English period, in fact the very last , our teacher told us ,’ Kids , you should all be like a bird that sits on a tree’ . She is never afraid of the branch breaking because her trust is not on the branch but on herself. Whatever comes and goes in life, all of you should never leave the belief that you have in yourself.”

So, why is believing in yourself important?

When you believe in yourself , it’ll help you in tackling any situation that is put before you .For example a debate contest or a speech contest at school. When you participate in it you will start seeing your potential .You might get nervous at first but then you realise that all it requires is a deep breath and a little confidence. Another important thing is you start being optimistic and radiate a positive energy because of the confidence that you already have. It is said that energy attracts energy and hence almost every time because of the confidence you attract success.

Believing in yourself also helps you to be creative. This is because you are never afraid of putting your ideas forward. We all know that life puts forward different challenges , along with challenges comes failures . Once you are confident , the impact of failure hits you less harsher and you start seeing it as another obstacle.

Let me give you an example. The corona virus has had a huge impact globally. India is on a lockdown for 21 days.During this time by believing that you can overcome this period , you are creating confidence not only in yourself but also in the people around you. You will start being very hygienic and also will this pandemic on a positive note and as an experience .

Now, how to start believing in yourself?

When you set goals , make it realistic and strive to achieve it.

Start trying out new things: this will help you to identify new potentials and help you to make yourself better. Repeat, Repeat and repeat: when you keep practicing a certain activity you get used to it , it’s not new to you so you get confident. Surround yourself with positivity : walk away from anyone or anything that makes you doubt yourself . As this will help in attracting positive energy , which further attracts success. Never compare yourself to anyone . what might be your strength might be their weakness.• Self talk : this is one of the most important things to do . Everyone around you is telling you that you can’t, so why not tell yourself that you can.

We always have to remember that life is never easy and nobody is perfect. Whenever we fall or fail we should never stop ourselves from standing up again and being confident about ourselves no matter what anyone says. Remember that believing in yourself and knowing who you are is very important as what lies in you is the greatest obstacle to what lies before you.

Thank you

Respected Principal, Vice principal  Teachers and my dear friends,
Good Morning to all,

Today, I would like to take your attention to a key problem we face, which is plastic.
There is a famous quote .It is only ‘just one small straw,” said eight billion people. Yes.. its a fact that 8 Billion plastic straws are used and thrown into our environment every year. The total production of plastic and other solid waste is around three million tons per day. This is  approximately ten times the amount we produced  a century ago. India generates close to 26,000 tonnes of plastic a day, and tragic part is , almost two third part of this remain uncollected. The presence of plastic possess an array of problems to our environment. When plastic accumulates in an area it will begin to negatively impact the natural environment and create problems for plants, wildlife, and even the human population. Often this includes killing plant life and posing dangers to local animals both in land and sea.

Plastic is undoubtedly a very useful material, but it is also made from toxic compounds known to cause illness, and because it is meant for durability, it is not biodegradable. Plastics and their by products are making our cities look like garbage bins, getting dumped into oceans and waterways, in huge quantities ,contributing to health problems in humans and animals.

Let us know turn our attention towards solution to this issue. The key steps to  address this issue are
1. Reduce the use of Plastic
2. Reuse Plastic
3. Recycle Plastics
And off course finally to invent plastic alternative substances or environmental friendly plastic substances.

Let me present a simple and practical solution to this issue which as students we all can easily take part . My idea is  a proposal to my school principal based on the principle of reduction, reuse and recycle. The idea is to implement a Green Ambassador program in our school and link it with the students’ performance card. The program will be based on the principle of Reduction, reusing and recycling of plastic. Every student will be given a card which will be evaluated every month and points will be awarded to students who demonstrates or produces the following results
1. Preparing plastic awareness posters and displaying in class rooms- 5 points
2. Submission of plastic Waste data every month- 5 points
3. Evidence of plastic reuse like paper bags used in grocery, old bottles used as plant pots etc.- 10 points
4. Evidence for monthly reduction of plastic waste- 5 points

Based on their accumulated points, the highest boy and girl from each class may be awarded the green ambassador badge. Annual progress card should have this entry for Green Ambassador program and all academic
I believe that such a Program which is linked to academic progress card can influence students and their families and create awareness about plastic. IF this program us successful in our school, the same program can be implemented in other schools also and so together the student community can achieve a lot against plastic waste.

I believe that  bringing awareness about plastic among the society and a building  can make a lot of changes. Let us start this from our self  by making a commitment today that we will start reducing the use of plastic

Thank you

“Health is like money. You never know the value of it until you lose it.”-Josh Billings

World Health Organization observes ‘World No Tobacco Day’ on May 31st every year. The campaign increases awareness on the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health, from cancer to chronic respiratory disease, the fundamental role lungs play for the health and well-being of all people. The campaign also serves as a call to action, advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption and engaging stakeholders across multiple sectors in the fight for tobacco control.

If you are wondering what tobacco is, well, tobacco is the common name of several plants in the Nicotiana genus and the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, and the general term for any product prepared from the cured leaves of the tobacco plant. And tobacco is not much safe as it seems. Tobacco is labelled as the world’s single greatest preventable cause of death. Surprising? But dig into the facts more. Tobacco use is a cause or risk factor for many diseases ranging from those affecting the heart, liver, and lungs to different types of cancer and it does affect most of your body parts too. Reports estimate that this year in 2020, tobacco will kill more than five million people and that is more than the number of people getting killed due to tuberculosis, HIV/AIDs and malaria combined. By 2030, the death toll will exceed eight million a year. But guess what? Tobacco doesn’t only have an impact on the smokers but also to people who have been exposed to the smoke. Hundreds of thousands of people who have never smoked die each year from diseases caused by breathing second – hand tobacco smoke.

According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute: “Of the more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful, including hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia. Among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can cause cancer.”

Yes, smoking tobacco may give some stress relief, but the impact it has on human health is dangerous. There are many options other than narcotics to relieve stress. Rather than taking it on tobacco and other harmful sedatives to relieve stress, go out there and see the beautiful side of the world and talk to people who you can rely on or listen to music, it is a much better stress reliever.

Tobacco is taking millions of life away each year and we still don’t understand the depth of the situation and still use them. So on this World Tobacco Day, let us do our part of spreading awareness about the unsafe use of tobacco and make sure the future generations of our species live healthy and peacefully.

International Women’s Day is observed on 8th March every year. It is considered as a day to discuss the hardships faced by women, ways to eliminate the discrimination against women, and to celebrate their achievements in all spheres of life. But the question remains unanswered- “Is it a one-day business?”

In the eyes of the present generation, we feel that gender equality is in place, even though not completely. A situation that once women did not receive the same rights as men, and that women suffered a lot, stuck with households and domestic chores seem almost unreasonable…almost.

Throughout history, we can see many protests, fights and even revolutions for women’s rights. Coincidentally, many such protests and rallies happened on 8th March throughout centuries and that is one of the main reasons why 8th March is celebrated as International Women’s Day. In the Vedic period, the women were considered as goddesses and were highly respected and revered in society. The status enjoyed by women then deteriorated in the later civilizations. Women were often stopped from getting educated or an option for widow remarriage. They were not even given the right to inheritance and ownership of property. It is as good as saying that, most of them did not have anything to call a right. Yet, we did have those few who rebelled against this, and many more who became Queens of rich and prosperous lands.

Those women who could not even voice themselves, faced many social evils like child marriage and dowry system. It became an institution and started to engulf them, and the Sati system became prominent. During the reign of the British, many social reformers in India such as Raja Rammohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, started rallies for the empowerment of women. Their efforts led to the abolition of Sati and the formulation of the Widow Remarriage Act. As a result of their tireless struggles, the status of women in socio-economic and political life began to exalt in the Indian society. And, that is particularly the reason why when India became independent, the lawmakers had decided that gender discrimination would be eliminated, and that women could even have voting rights and stand for elections. But such a privilege was not bestowed upon many other women across the world, and that was how the great women’s suffragette movements started emerging; first in pockets and then widespread. International Women’s Day is also celebrated to remember all those efforts put in by women throughout history, all across the world.

But even after seven decades of Indian Independence, many women are still suffering in all fields. Forget about women, a female baby, not even born into this world, is killed or after birth is abandoned, just because she is considered to be a burden-Female Feticide. In many fields, especially in the rural areas, women are paid less than their male counterparts for the same job. Due to the profound and fundamental patriarchal mentality in Indian society that runs very deep, women are still swindled, humiliated, harassed, ill-treated and taken advantage of.

Women empowerment means the liberation of women from the diabolical holds of social, economic, political, caste and gender-based discrimination, to covey and exhibit thoughts freely and to have the self-confidence to articulate and advocate the power to negotiate and decide.

Based on the ideas upheld by our founding fathers for women empowerment, many provisions were incorporated in the Indian Constitution. Women empowerment has become something sought out today for those working parallel to men in all sections. They profess an independent outlook, whether they are living inside their home or working outside-at the same time not all.

There are many aspects to which such empowerment should be done. A grave ingredient of the so-called social empowerment of women is the endorsement of gender equality. Gender equality encompass a society where women and men enjoy the same opportunities civil rights, and obligations. We have to empower women with the knowledge, skills, and self-confidence essential to partake fully in the development process i.e., make women understand and aware of their rights and develop their confidence to claim them. Better conditions that reduce their financial dependence on their male counterparts and making them a significant part of the human resource is also needed. The rural areas in many countries are, by and large, submerged in an orthodox and medieval outlook, turning down even the slightest chance that women can be granted an equal say in the matters of their education, right to choose a partner, career, and social interactions. Arrangements should be made for an effective legal structure that addresses the fissures between what the law says and what actually happens. We, in India, also need a political system encouraging the participation of women in the significant and important political decision-making process. Efforts should be made to end the so-called patriarchal influences that work to keep alive the tradition of male dominance that issue inhumane and unlawful orders. This would ensure an equal society.

This year, 2020, the theme for International Women’s Day is ‘I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights’ with #EachForEqual. It focuses on promoting gender equality in all fields, especially at work. It satiates to the issue that not a single country can validate that they are they have gender equality. The multiple hurdles faced by any nation are to be shattered in this regard. Women empowerment, in the truest sense, will be met only when there is a behavioral shift towards womenfolk, considering them with proper respect, dignity, fairness, and equality, by the individuals and society at large.

Happy International Women’s Day.
