Trees are our best friends and are called  the lungs of the planet for a good reason. They offer significant contribution to our  environment by providing the most vital oxygen, without which we cannot live more than about  two minutes. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide, there by  improving air quality .

Trees are  also known to have medicinal values. and some possess antiseptic properties. Modern studies shows that if you are in an environment surrounded by  lush green tress and green space,  you will immediately feel the calmness , your blood pressure drops and the stress levels will come down.It is said that one tree will serve to about ten generation of a family.

Trees play a significant role  in our day to day lives. The fruits and vegetables we eat, the clothes we wear and the medicines we take are all from the trees around. See, how important trees are?  Also, through a process called Transpiration, trees play an important role in the water cycle. They help in cleaning the air and water. Trees are also used to make furniture. We also make products like glue, paper, rubber etc. from trees which we use in our day to day life.

During the hot season, trees provide us shelter by protecting us from hot sun. , They help in reflecting the harmful rays of sun and maintaining a balanced temperature. Trees also help prevent flooding and soil erosion.Needless to day,Our wildlife  totally depend on trees for  their habitat.

On the other hand, man because of his greed, and  in the name of development, is destroying forests by cutting down trees. We have many examples for this . Last year due to deforestation, The Amazon Forests were in fire. Just think how many trees must have died? Another example is the earthquake that occurred in Kerala in 2018. Why did this happen? Its all because of  Due to deforestation.

Trees are very important natural resources. We need them for our survival. They make the nature look beautiful and attractive. Often we forget the importance of trees even though we use them in our daily lives. We must express our love for trees just like how Amrita Devi Bishnoi did. Her love for trees was historic. She saved the trees by hugging them from being cur down by the king of Jodhpur and finally along with 363 other people, Bishnoi  sacrificed her life for the protection of trees,

World Tree Day is celebrated every year on March 21 to spread  the awareness among people about the importance of trees and forests  . Several voluntary tree plantations are carried out  across the world on this day. This year we couldn’t celebrate World Tree Day because of the current CORONA situation, but these circumstances should not  stop us from planting trees. We should try to  plant some  at home during this lock down.

Now that we know the importance of trees. Let’s see what we can do to save them:

  1. Use paper wisely. Borrow, share and donate books.
  2. Prevent overgrazing of animals.
  3. Minimize the use of disposable wood material.
  4. Prevent excess deforestation.

Now Let me draw the curtains by saying the famous quote by Franklin D Roosevelt.

A NATION THAT DESTROYS ITS SOIL, DESTROYS ITSELF. FORESTS ARE THE LUNGS OF OUR LAND, PURIFYING THE AIR AND GIVING FRESH STRENGTH TO OUR PEOPLE.”

Respected Principal, Vice principal  Teachers and my dear friends,
Good Morning to all,

Today, I would like to take your attention to a key problem we face, which is plastic.
There is a famous quote .It is only ‘just one small straw,” said eight billion people. Yes.. its a fact that 8 Billion plastic straws are used and thrown into our environment every year. The total production of plastic and other solid waste is around three million tons per day. This is  approximately ten times the amount we produced  a century ago. India generates close to 26,000 tonnes of plastic a day, and tragic part is , almost two third part of this remain uncollected. The presence of plastic possess an array of problems to our environment. When plastic accumulates in an area it will begin to negatively impact the natural environment and create problems for plants, wildlife, and even the human population. Often this includes killing plant life and posing dangers to local animals both in land and sea.

Plastic is undoubtedly a very useful material, but it is also made from toxic compounds known to cause illness, and because it is meant for durability, it is not biodegradable. Plastics and their by products are making our cities look like garbage bins, getting dumped into oceans and waterways, in huge quantities ,contributing to health problems in humans and animals.

Let us know turn our attention towards solution to this issue. The key steps to  address this issue are
1. Reduce the use of Plastic
2. Reuse Plastic
3. Recycle Plastics
And off course finally to invent plastic alternative substances or environmental friendly plastic substances.

Let me present a simple and practical solution to this issue which as students we all can easily take part . My idea is  a proposal to my school principal based on the principle of reduction, reuse and recycle. The idea is to implement a Green Ambassador program in our school and link it with the students’ performance card. The program will be based on the principle of Reduction, reusing and recycling of plastic. Every student will be given a card which will be evaluated every month and points will be awarded to students who demonstrates or produces the following results
1. Preparing plastic awareness posters and displaying in class rooms- 5 points
2. Submission of plastic Waste data every month- 5 points
3. Evidence of plastic reuse like paper bags used in grocery, old bottles used as plant pots etc.- 10 points
4. Evidence for monthly reduction of plastic waste- 5 points

Based on their accumulated points, the highest boy and girl from each class may be awarded the green ambassador badge. Annual progress card should have this entry for Green Ambassador program and all academic
I believe that such a Program which is linked to academic progress card can influence students and their families and create awareness about plastic. IF this program us successful in our school, the same program can be implemented in other schools also and so together the student community can achieve a lot against plastic waste.

I believe that  bringing awareness about plastic among the society and a building  can make a lot of changes. Let us start this from our self  by making a commitment today that we will start reducing the use of plastic

Thank you

“Health is like money. You never know the value of it until you lose it.”-Josh Billings

World Health Organization observes ‘World No Tobacco Day’ on May 31st every year. The campaign increases awareness on the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health, from cancer to chronic respiratory disease, the fundamental role lungs play for the health and well-being of all people. The campaign also serves as a call to action, advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption and engaging stakeholders across multiple sectors in the fight for tobacco control.

If you are wondering what tobacco is, well, tobacco is the common name of several plants in the Nicotiana genus and the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, and the general term for any product prepared from the cured leaves of the tobacco plant. And tobacco is not much safe as it seems. Tobacco is labelled as the world’s single greatest preventable cause of death. Surprising? But dig into the facts more. Tobacco use is a cause or risk factor for many diseases ranging from those affecting the heart, liver, and lungs to different types of cancer and it does affect most of your body parts too. Reports estimate that this year in 2020, tobacco will kill more than five million people and that is more than the number of people getting killed due to tuberculosis, HIV/AIDs and malaria combined. By 2030, the death toll will exceed eight million a year. But guess what? Tobacco doesn’t only have an impact on the smokers but also to people who have been exposed to the smoke. Hundreds of thousands of people who have never smoked die each year from diseases caused by breathing second – hand tobacco smoke.

According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute: “Of the more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful, including hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia. Among the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can cause cancer.”

Yes, smoking tobacco may give some stress relief, but the impact it has on human health is dangerous. There are many options other than narcotics to relieve stress. Rather than taking it on tobacco and other harmful sedatives to relieve stress, go out there and see the beautiful side of the world and talk to people who you can rely on or listen to music, it is a much better stress reliever.

Tobacco is taking millions of life away each year and we still don’t understand the depth of the situation and still use them. So on this World Tobacco Day, let us do our part of spreading awareness about the unsafe use of tobacco and make sure the future generations of our species live healthy and peacefully.

Introduction:

We all know ‘Swatch Bharath’ literally means ‘Clean India’, we should also know that this was the dream of the father of our nation Mahatma Gandhiji. In order to make his dream come true, our honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modii started a nationwide cleanliness drive on 145th birthday of Gandhiji in the year 2014. It is called as Swatch Bharath Abhiyan.

Clean India, one India:

It is said that cleanliness is next to Godliness. India being a holy land should set as an example for the world nations, but the irony is that we were never taught, that it’s our duty to keep our motherland clean. Swatch Bharat Abhiyan has totally changed this. It is not just a awareness programme, it is a call for the whole nation to come together for the betterment of our country.

In rural areas only 30% of the children continue with their high school education. Most of the girls dropout of the school because there is no toilet facilities available in maximum villages. Considering the future of our nation, government passed an order that each and every school should have toilets. Through various schemes subsides are given for the construction of separate or common toilets. By doing so open defecation and henceforth spreading of diseases like cholera and typhoid are controlled.

We can see people throwing garbage’s in and around the garbage bin. In order to stop this, garbage collecting persons were appointed to collect the waste from each and every household. Garbage treatment plants are set up throughout the country. Segregation of waste has to be done before it is treated, so separate dustbins are provided for organic decomposable waste and other inorganic wastes. Through constant advertisements and camps pubic is made aware of the need to dispose the wastes separately.

Many voluntary groups initiate this by cleaning their surrounding areas. Such groups are identified and awarded by the government. Many colleges and schools like our’s, teach students how to manage the waste in detail format.

Conclusion:

An initiation has been taken to make our India clean. This cannot be achieved in a day or two; it will take years of constant efforts and self realization of each and every individual to make ‘Swatch Bharat’ a reality.

Air and the water are the two most essential things for all living beings in the world. 71% of the earth is covered with water; about 97 % of it is salt water, only 3% of our earth water is fresh water. More than half of this fresh water is in the form of ice or glacier. The rest of it is ground water, rivers, lakes & streams. Very little amount of water is in atmosphere. The demand for water and its availability tells us the clear need for the
conservation of water.

Save water, Save life:-
We humans take everything for granted. Each and every living thing has its right on the nature. We are exploiting the earth’s resources. We are polluting the water bodies and are bringing harm to ourselves. Deforestation has reduced the rainfall. Big buildings have
replaced the lakes. We have not left any place to save the rainwater, which during heavy rainfall floods the cities and ends up in sea without any use. Each house should be designed to harvest rain water. Every single drop of water counts, we need to save water to save
ourselves.

There are many small ways in which water can be saved. Using buckets instead of shower for bathing, watering plants etc. There are different cheap and best methods to purify or to reuse the contaminated water. Some of the African countries are already affected by water scarcity. We should be wise enough to save water while there is still time. It is been predicted that there can be another world war, the main reason for it being water scarcity. Every single person has the moral responsibility to stop this from happening. Using as little as is required in one way and the other way is to save rain water. Even for agriculture more modern techniques are available today. Farmers must be trained properly to adopt those irrigation techniques to save water. It is a global issue that has to be taken care of immediately.

Conclusion:-
Water is the elixir of life. My grandfather used river water, my father used well water, I am getting it through taps, God knows about the future generation. So conservation of water is the only option left to us to save the lives on earth. After all, we have only one earth.

Respected school principal, teachers and my dear friends,
Good morning.

Cancer is One of the biggest health challenge we face today . Each year, millions of people are diagnosed with cancer around the world, and unfortunately more than half of the patients eventually will not survive.  With nine million deaths, Cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide and to make it worse, The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation predicts that that by 2026, more than 20 million people will be living with cancer or be survivors of cancer.

In our global fight against cancer, February 4 is observed as World Cancer Day. The objective of the day is to raise awareness about cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. It is estimated that from around nine million People who die from cancer least one third of common cancers are preventable. This means that up to 3 million lives could be saved each year if we implement effective measures for the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer.

Students can play a vital role in this fight and it’s our duty to be a part of it. Some of the most effective steps to prevent cancer is by reducing your chances of  exposure to cancer related risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol, obesity, physical inactivity, infections, environmental pollution, work related carcinogens and exposure to other radiation. Five major areas where students can play significant roles in our fight against cancer are

1. Awareness about the usage of Alcohol and Tobacco
2. Importance of diet and nutrition, Food habits
3. Importance of physical activity and overweight issues
4. Importance of self-awareness, early detection and treatment of cancer
5. Raising funds for cancer victims.

It’s scientifically proven that most alcohol drinks carriers the risk of occurrence of many cancers, and even moderate alcohol intake increases the risk of cancer. It is terrifying to understand that Tobacco smoke contains at least 80 different cancer-causing substances and today tobacco use is responsible for around twenty two percent of cancer deaths. Excess weight has been linked to an increased risk of developing twelve different cancers, including bowl and pancreatic cancers. In general, greater weight gain, is associated with greater cancer risks. Regular physical activity not only helps to reduce excess body fat and the cancer risks associated with this, but being physically active can help to reduce the risks of developing colon, breast and endometrial cancers. Today, it’s a proven fact that that diets and nutritional intake, particularly diets high in red meats, processed meats, salted foods and low in fruits and vegetables have an impact on cancer risks.

As students we can bring awareness in the society about these facts by organizing poster campaigns on these issues. We must discourage people from the usage of Alcohol and Tobacco and educate them about the consequences. Any such incidences in our school should be brought to the attention of our teachers. Regarding the importance of physical activity, we must lead by example by participating in sports and other school games. We must not only follow a healthy diet.

There are a number of cancers which can be identified early which helps to improve the chances of successful treatment outcomes. This can also lower the treatment costs and with fewer side effects for patients. New branches of cancer treatment like Immuno therapy, hormone therapy and gene therapy and evolving. We can prepare small educational pamphlets and distribute and invite experts to our schools to take classes on these topics. Cancer is a very expensive disease. We can  support cancer victims financially by raising funds and donate to cancer hospital or patients.

Dear friends, its time to leave the passive mode. Cancer is a reality and it could happen to anyone at any time. and we need a coordinated social work to get rid of it. Today ,on World Cancer day, let us take a pledge that we will join this fight and will take an active role in our own way. Together we can achieve a lot.

Thank you
