We all know that June 21 was declared as the International Yoga day by the U.N. General Assembly. On that day, record number of people practised Yoga in Delhi under the leadership of our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. It was a world record for the highest participation in one single Yoga session. Why is Yoga so popular? People misunderstand it to be just exercise. The fact is that Yoga is a way of life. While all the other exercises take care of our physical conditions, Yoga helps us to control our mind as well body.
There are various yoga postures or ‘asanas,’ that help us to keep our body fit and healthy. ‘Pranayama’ or breathing exercise helps us to rejuvenate our mind and soul. It is said we should begin our day with pranayama and it helps us to think better and stay calm and peaceful. Our sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diet and stress…. all these lead to various diseases. Yoga teaches us to control all this through exercises and to rejuvenate body and mind. In this way we can avoid many diseases and reduce stress. Meditation or ‘dhyana’ teaches us how to discipline our mind. Through a systematic practice of yoga, people can overcome their negative thinking which in turn give them confidence and enhances their mental power. This increases self awareness and helps us to increase our attention and concentration; hence yoga is suitable for children also.
The Bhagvad Gita says, “A person is said to have achieved yoga - union with the self - when the perfectly disciplined mind gets freedom from all desires and becomes absorbed in the self alone.” Through continued practice of yoga we can drive out evils like depression, ego, unhappiness, sickness etc; thus keep our mind and body free and live a healthy and happy life. Now we can proudly tell the world that, Yoga is India’s gift for you.
