As we all know 5th of September is celebrated as Teachers Day, all over India. It is the birthday of our second President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was born on 5th September 1888 to a telugu family in Andhra Pradesh. He was a writer, a statesman and above all a great teacher. Once his students wanted to celebrate his birthday, so he advised them to celebrate it as “Teachers Day” as a mark of respect to all teachers. Since then 5th September is celebrated as Teachers Day all around India.

Dr.Radhakrishnan was the first Vice President of India from 1952-1962. He was also the second President of India from 1962-1967. He received the Bharat Ratna or India’s greatest civilian award in 1954. Schools all around India celebrate Teachers Day as a mark of respect to their teachers. In many schools senior students dress themselves up as teachers and take charge of the school that day, under the supervision of their teachers and principal. Thus they get a glimpse of the hardships faced by the teacher’s everyday. In my school we enact a play in the assembly, which shows our respect to our teachers. We like to give gifts to our teachers, but our principal has warned us from giving any gifts. So we give them only a flower. Last year our class teacher gave all of us chocolates on 5thSeptember. We also played a game, it was to write three sentences. We should write a good point and a bad point and what needs to be changed in her. At first, I was a bit hesitant, but she told us not to mention our names so, I was relieved. The chits were to be put in the magic box that was kept in the classroom. When I told this to my mother, she said that it was to improve herself. Some years back our English teacher was absent on teachers day as she had broken her leg due to an accident. Some students of her class, with the permission of the principal and their respective parents visited her. Later on she thanked the students in the assembly. She was very happy and overwhelmed seeing the love of her students.

Teachers not only impart knowledge, but also shape the personality of the students. As Dr. Radhakrishnan rightly said, “Teachers should be the best minds in the country.”I too believe that teachers and mothers are the only people in this earth who can mend and mold children.
