In 1897 , the India born, British doctor, Sir Ronald Ross discovered that the female mosquitoes carry and transmit malaria between Humans. World Mosquito Day, observed annually on 20 August, is a commemoration of this discovery and is observed since 1897. The day is a tribute to the path breaking discovery of Sir Donald Ross, saving millions around the globe by laying the foundation of Humans fight against Malaria.

Donald Ross was born in Almora in present day Uttarakhand, India in  1857. He was sent to England by his parents to pursue his studies and after passing the examination from Royal College of Surgeons of England, he joined Indian medical service in 1881 . In 1902 he was award the Nobel Prize.

Mosquitoes are considered to be one of the most deadly animal in the world. They carry and transmit diseases like Dengue, Yellow fever, malaria chikungunya and Zika and according to WHO is responsible for more than 1 Million death globally every year. Despite of Our best efforts to curb Malaria, it continues to pose a threat to humanity. According to the latest estimates from WHO, there were 214 million new cases of malaria worldwide in 2015 . Children under five are particularly susceptible to malaria illness, infection and death. In 2015, malaria killed an estimated 306,000  kids under the age of 5, globally.

Prevention is always better than cure. The best way to prevent Malaria is to try to control mosquito build up in your surrounding by keeping your surroundings clean, without much water collection bodies like small pits, waste cups etc and disinfect periodically. Its case of infection Its important get proper medical treatment. We have not yet fully developed an effective vaccine against Malaria. World Mosquito Day aims to raise awareness about the causes of malaria and how it can be prevented. It is also a salute to the groundbreaking work of Sir Ross and scientists who have followed him. As Children, let’s all join together  in our  fight against this  deadly disease and take a pledge that we will work towards building awareness in the society about the threats posed by mosquitoes and how to prevent it.
